Exciting Opportunity to Collaborate with our Trad Orchestra

Music Generation Laois are establishing a new group to take part in a unique once-off performance with our Trad Orchestra, working with Ollie Tumner a percussion specialist from the UK and our own percussion specialist, Eddie O’Neill. This once-off performance will last approximately 7 minutes, and showcase at Music @ the Malt House in Stradbally on the 4 of May, 2019.

This project is for musicians age 12 upwards, and is focused on body percussion (a combination of clapping, feet stomping, clicking etc). Training will be provided (we do not expect you to be an expert in body percussion to take part!).

Rehearsals take place in Laois Music Centre, Church Avenue, Portlaoise on the following dates:

 Thurs 28 Feb, 6:30pm-7pm

Thurs 14 March, 6:30pm-7:30pm

Thurs 28 March, 6:30pm-7:30pm

Thurs 4 April 6:30pm-7:30pm

Thurs 11 April, 6:30pm-7:30pm

You must also be available for a final rehearsal on Fri 3 May (times tbc), and performance on Sat 4 May (times tbc).

Participation is FREE OF CHARGE, open to students of Laois School of Music and Music Generation Laois, however, you must adhere to the schedule, repeated absenteeism will not be permitted.

Music Generation Laois Harp Orchestra

 

We are delighted to announce the recommencement of our Music Generation Laois Harp Orchestra. Siobhan Buckley is composing music for the orchestra, to be premiered as part of National Harp Day 2018.

Outline rehearsal schedule:

PLEASE NOTE, NO STUDENT WILL BE REQUIRED FOR THE ENTIRE DURATION OF REHEARSALS, ONCE WE KNOW WHO IS JOINING, WE WILL BREAK REHERSALS INTO SECTIONS!

Location: Rehearsals take place in Portlaoise Further Education and Training Centre, Tower Hill, Portlaoise

Fee: Membership Fee for the orchestra is €25

Harps: If you own your own harp, you must bring it to rehearsals, MGL harps will be available to our harp students who do not yet own their own harp

Please note, the orchestra is only open to harp students from Music Generation Laois, ie. those in our schools programmes and those who attend classes in our centre.

Catriona McKay & Olav Johansson to perform at Leaves Literary & Music Festival

On Saturday 11 November, to celebrate National Harp Day, Scottish Harpist, Catriona McKay together with Swedish Nyckelharpa player Olov Johansson, will perform as part of the Leaves Literary and Music Festival taking place in the beautiful Emo Court at 5.30pm. Playing a fusion of Scottish and Swedish folk music, the duo will be joined by the Music Generation Laois Harp Ensemble for the performance.

Tionól 2017, 3-5 November

Following on from the success of last year’s Tionól, we are delighted to announce that Music Generation Laois, with the support of the Music Generation National Development Office National Projects funding and the Trench Trust, will deliver a Tionól for Harps and Pipes in Portlaoise from the 3 to the 5 of  November 2017.

The purpose of this weekend is to bring together pipers and harpists and their Tutors from Music Generations throughout Ireland, for a weekend of workshops, sessions and performances, including  an opportunity for students to get workshops from well-known non MG guest tutors including Catriona McKay (harp), David Power (pipes), Tríona Marshall (harp) & Michael Rooney (harp).

A range of classes are available, open to all students from recent beginners to advanced in the harp and uilleann pipes. Tutors include:

Harp: Siobhan Buckley, Michael Rooney, Catriona McKay, Tríona Marshall, Ramune Sakalauskaite, Deirdre Ní Bhuachalla, Gráinne Hambly, Kerri Mullan & Billy Jackson

Supervision

Under 18s will be supervised during break times unless alternative arrangements are made by parents/guardians.

Limited number of harps are available for Music Generation Laois harp students.
