Music Generation Laois Music Technology Easter Workshop

irse Anton_ Claire Faherty_ Rosaleen Molloy Director Music Generation_ Aisling Finnegan_Dave from Songschool_ Kelly ann tuft

Teenagers from across Laois attended Music Generation Laois’ Music Technology Camp, held in the Portlaoise Youth Café over the Easter Holidays. The course was open to young people interested in music, and no previous instrumental or vocal experience was required.

Music Generation Laois delivered the camp in association with Songschool, and Tutors from Songschool shared their extensive expertise in producing digital music with participants, and over the course of the day, two original tracks of music were created.  The workshop was one of many activities now available to young people in Laois through Music Generation. The range of programmes available include Glee Clubs, harp tuition, uilleann pipe tuition, choirs, brass, African drumming and The Music Box  – a programme for children with special needs. These programmes are now available in schools and centres across the county, with further expansion planned for the coming months.

Rosaleen Molloy, National Director of Music Generation visited the Music Technology Workshop, and was extremely impressed with developments in Laois to-date since the launch of Music Generation Laois in April 2012. “It’s great to see the ambitious plans for music education in County Laois developing through the Music Generation Laois programme. The positive participation by so many children and young people in the range of activity now established is indeed a measure of its success. Music Generation – the U2 and Ireland Funds’ supported National Music Education Programme initiated by Music Network, is delighted to be working with Laois Music Education Partnership in making music education happen.”  Locally, Music Generation Laois is supported by Laois Music Education Partnership, made up of Laois County Council, Laois VEC and Laois Partnership Company.

Music Generation Laois School of Rock is due to be launched in the Portlaoise Youth Café in the coming weeks, with guitar and drum classes, and band opportunities available to 10-17 year olds. Music Generation Laois will also run a School of Rock Summer Camp, Jazz Summer Camp and Drum Camp in The Dunamaise Theatre in late June and early July.

An Audience with the Edge

The Edge and Kgomotso Ngwenya (Mountrath) 2

On Monday 21 January, the Music Generation Laois Stampede Drummers travelled to the Department of Education and Skills in Dublin, where the young group of musicians met with and performed for The Edge of legendary Irish rock band, U2.
Under the Direction of well-known Drummer Eddie O’Neill, the 6 young Stampede Drummers performed for an audience that included Minster for Education and Skills, Ruairí Quinn TD and Paul McGuinness, U2’s well-known Manager. Siofra and Tiernan Marum (Portlaoise), Adam McEvoy (Portlaoise), Chris Farrell (Stradbally) Aisling Page (Mountrath) and Kgomotso Ngwenya (Mountrath) were the lucky young performers who gained an audience with The Edge. The group enjoyed significant national publicity on the RTE News, RTE Radio and in the national press including

The Irish Times, The Irish Independent, and The Irish Examiner. The performance took place at the inaugural Seminar for Music Education Partnerships, presented by the Department of Education and Skills in partnership with Music Generation.
Laois is among 12 Counties/Cities who have set up a Music Education Partnership and Laois Music Education Partnership is led by Laois County Council and supported by Laois VEC and Laois Partnership Company. Laois Music Education Partnership manages Music Generation Laois, a new music education service for children and young people in Co Laois, and the service that is responsible for developing the Stampede Drumming Group of young musicians. Nationally, Music Generation is supported by U2 and the Ireland Funds.

At Monday’s Seminar, the Department of Education and Skills, gave announced their commitment to fund the Music Generation imitative on a phased basis from July 2014.In response to the announcement by Ruairi Quinn TD, The Edge stated, “We are absolutely delighted that the Department of Education and Skills has committed to the long-term funding of this brilliant Music Generation scheme. The response has been incredible with over 5,000 children and young people getting music lessons. It is a source of great pride for U2 that along with The Ireland Funds we were able to step in and keep it going after government cut backs put it in jeopardy in 2009”.

Music Generation Laois continues to expand across Laois, and places are available for both schools and independent students to join the Stampede Drumming programme, a fantastic music tuition programme using a variety of world percussion, drum sticks and handheld percussion.
