Teenagers from across Laois attended Music Generation Laois’ Music Technology Camp, held in the Portlaoise Youth Café over the Easter Holidays. The course was open to young people interested in music, and no previous instrumental or vocal experience was required.
Music Generation Laois delivered the camp in association with Songschool, and Tutors from Songschool shared their extensive expertise in producing digital music with participants, and over the course of the day, two original tracks of music were created. The workshop was one of many activities now available to young people in Laois through Music Generation. The range of programmes available include Glee Clubs, harp tuition, uilleann pipe tuition, choirs, brass, African drumming and The Music Box – a programme for children with special needs. These programmes are now available in schools and centres across the county, with further expansion planned for the coming months.
Rosaleen Molloy, National Director of Music Generation visited the Music Technology Workshop, and was extremely impressed with developments in Laois to-date since the launch of Music Generation Laois in April 2012. “It’s great to see the ambitious plans for music education in County Laois developing through the Music Generation Laois programme. The positive participation by so many children and young people in the range of activity now established is indeed a measure of its success. Music Generation – the U2 and Ireland Funds’ supported National Music Education Programme initiated by Music Network, is delighted to be working with Laois Music Education Partnership in making music education happen.” Locally, Music Generation Laois is supported by Laois Music Education Partnership, made up of Laois County Council, Laois VEC and Laois Partnership Company.
Music Generation Laois School of Rock is due to be launched in the Portlaoise Youth Café in the coming weeks, with guitar and drum classes, and band opportunities available to 10-17 year olds.
